Adobe InDesign Typography : Getting Started with Illustrator: Drawing basic shapes for your logo

If you're just somewhere in the ball part, that's perfectly fine. But if you really want to get that technical about it, you can just remove the shape and draw that out this way. By clicking once on the art board, it will automatically give you this where you can get 115 and 95. Now, how did I know what these numbers were? I don't. I just guess. Whatever looks good to your eyes is ultimately what you want. But, 115 by 95 looks like a good starting place for me. Once I have the shape onscreen, I always like to align it directly to the center just so that I have a nice centered up part to deal with. From here, we need to draw the little parts on the hat. There are four folds in the hat up top here. I'm only gonna do three for simplicity's sake. So let's go over here and grab the Ellipse Tool. I'll start right here on the corner point of this original rectangle that I drew here. And I'm going to draw out from the center. And I'm gonna do that by holding down the option key on the Mac, the alt key on the PC. As I'm holding down that key, I'm also going to click and drag from that corner point. If you want to throw in the shift key, that will constrain the proportions of this. And what I'm looking for is a shape that's about 80 points by 80 points. Something kind of like this. Once I have that, I'm just going to release my mouse and then release the keys on my keyboard. That's going to create that first little fold of the hat that I'm looking for. Next up I'm going to create a duplicate of this. I don't have to redraw it. All I have to do is duplicate it. The easiest way to do that is to grab my Selection Tool. Come out on to the object itself. And then somewhere here, see how I hover over it and you see that little double arrow that appears. That happens when I'm holding down the option key. So look for this to appear while your'e holding down the option key. Once you see that appear, click and drag. You're still holding down the option key. And what I want this to do is I want it to snap directly into the middle of this rectangle. So once it's in the middle, I'll let go of my mouse and let go of my key. The next part of the fold should be actually pretty easy because we're gonna go equal distance from this point to that point that we did from this point to this point. So, what do we do? We just duplicate the same transformation. There are two ways to do this. First is by going Object, Transform, Transform Again, or as you can see here, you can hit the keyboard shortcut, command or control d. Once you press this, it should give you that third fold in the hat. Now all we have to do here to kind of make this a little bit more realistic is move this middle one up using the arrow keys on my keyboard. We'll just nudge it up just a little bit. There we go. So, for the most part the basic shape of our hat is done. We do need to combine the shapes together but we're going to talk about that in a later movie so I don't need to worry about that right now. The only other thing missing from the hat right now is the little band across the bottom. That's easily created by coming over and grabbing the Rectangle Tool. Once I grab the Rectangle Tool, I'll make a Selection just like so. And that creates the band. I wanna make sure that it's aligned with the edges of everything. And I can adjust the height just a little bit and there we go. So there's the basic outline of our hat. You can see this thing is really coming together just by drawing this very, very basic shapes. And from here, we're ready to take it to the next level by turning these basic shapes into complex artwork using a very special tool in Illustrator.
